In the Studio

I don’t fit into one box. I find myself diving into many identities: an artist, a photographer, a journalist, a student, and a woman. I believe that I am able to support the various facets of myself because all of my efforts and interests have a common thread: a simple desire to make the world a brighter place – physically, emotionally, and even philosophically. I don’t fit into one box, and I love it that way.

My Story

I am, first and foremost, a student. In art, in journalism, in life, and a freshman majoring in Computer Science.

I first picked up a camera when I was 6, snapping pictures of falling leaves, cracks in sidewalks, and people looming over me. Slowly, I learned how not to take blurry photos, how to set aperture, and what the heck ISO was. Eventually, I approached the question, "What am I trying to say with my photographs?"

I grapple with that question in all facets of my life, what I am doing, and how will it help the artistic conversation reach a point that I believe will be better for society. Wherever I go in my life, I believe that I must try to make my presence productive to something greater than myself with the capabilities I will forever be developing and refining.

For several years as a documentary photographer, I’ve been deeply involved in addressing the global refugee crisis. I’ve documented the on-the-ground situation in refugee camps across Greece and Mexico and I work to add constructively to the conversation regarding displaced people and immigration issues.

As a journalist, I've had sought out opportunities to explore a range of women's and young people's issues, continually working to educate myself and others on pressing topics affecting large and small communities globally.

And, finally, my art. Although broken up with images of fleeting and sometimes whimsical topics and moments, I strive to use my artistic capabilities to explore personal stories of identity and growth.

My subject-matter is deeply ingrained with who I am as an individual. While I am at an emerging moment in my personal and professional journey, I am determined to make the miles I have journeyed and not merely the years I have lived determine how and where I will be headed tomorrow and in the future.

You are most welcome to come along for the ride.
